Job Outlook for Teen Volunteers

Landing that first job can be a challenging experience but smart preparation can level the playing field for teens starting out in the job market.  One way to prepare is to volunteer in the community.

A volunteer job can help teens to develop new skills, adjust to the work environment, and build their resume.  Many teens often neglect to include their volunteer jobs in their work experience because they were not paid.  However, volunteer jobs can be used to showcase their specific skills and experiences and bridge gaps in their resumes.  Volunteer program managers will also provide letters of recommendation or references for volunteers who are seeking paid employment.

When considering a volunteer position, teens should consider the careers that they are interested in pursuing.  A volunteer position will allow them to “try out” specific career areas and help identify skills they want to develop further.  Showing specific experience in a particular career area can help a their college application to stand out.  An internship, either paid or unpaid, can be tailored to meet a student’s specific needs, interests and availability.  Also consider pursuing an internship during the school year when fewer students are seeking them.  Working several afternoons a week can quickly give a teen many new opportunities.

Locating a volunteer opportunity does not have to be a daunting experience.  Many websites, such as www.volunteermatch.com, http://www.volunteerpowercrew.org or www.handsonnorthtexas.org, allow potential volunteers to search for opportunities based on their location, cause area and minimum age requirements.  Volunteer Centers can also help connect potential volunteers with opportunities.  To find the Volunteer Center in your area, please visit www.pointsoflight.org
